Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Crabtree, founder of Happy Brain Science, located in Sisters, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Because life is too short to be miserable at work, we teach the science of happiness and thriving at work. Using keynotes, presentations, workshops, individual and group coaching, and our card game Choose Happiness @ Work, we help people apply science to thrive at work. Our repeat clients include Dreamworks, Google, Nike, Intel, HP, Activision, Kaiser-Permanente, Blizzard Entertainment, Boeing, NOAA, The Humane Society of the US, The National Park Service, and NBC.

Tell us about yourself

I literally stumbled into the science of happiness when I discovered Professor Sonya Lyubomirsky's book "The How of Happiness." Since I was unhappy at work at that time and had seen too much suffering in the world (and even my own family of origin), I felt like the world needed to hear about ways to feel better. I started presenting about it on the side of my leadership role at Intel and quickly found myself resigning to teach the science of well-being full-time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

People tell me years later that I've changed their lives for the better. That's the best feeling in the world! We just passed our 10-year anniversary of Happy Brain Science. I'm so grateful to everyone who's made it possible to help people for the past decade. And I can hardly wait to see what comes next!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Deciding where to focus. As a business owner, you always have hundreds of tasks and projects that could use attention at any time. Clear prioritization is essential.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Prepare, then take the leap! The worst-case scenario for most is simply getting another job.
  2. Focus! Do less, better. Get very clear on what you need most, and focus on that.
  3. Invest in the happiness and thriving of your people. Happier people are 12-25% more productive, according to various studies.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Life's too short to be unhappy at work...or working for someone else when you want to be your own boss.
