Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hannah Charron, Founder of Hannah's Healthies, located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a Certified Nutrition Practitioner! Hannah's Healthies is my guidance towards elevated health and getting in touch with yourself. I coach individuals to a higher quality of life through balanced eating patterns and uplifting lifestyle habits that are both attainable and sustainable. My approach is food focused, but not entirely. A healthy lifestyle doesn't solely revolve around healthy food! Our well-being is also extremely influenced by our environment and way of life beyond what we eat. I intertwine all that is holistic by integrating ancient methodologies with new ones.

Lifestyle changes can be demanding, so I guide my clients gradually to ensure that any shifts are not daunting or overwhelming. I work closely with all genders between the ages of 18 and 35 who are struggling to feel well after a celiac diagnosis, gluten intolerances or sensitivities, as well as weight management and the connection between digestive health and mental health. I guide clients through proper education, tools, tips, recipes, and support in order to heal their unhappy guts and feel better overall. I deeply thrive in educating others to evolve into optimal health through internal and external practices with up-to-date knowledge. I am devoted to coaching my clients to ensure they thrive and find clarity.

Tell us about yourself

Similarly to many of us working in the wellness world, my personal health journey is what brought me into my studies! Coming from a history of severe anxiety, heavy medication use, high stress, extremely disordered eating, amenorrhea, hypothyroidism, and being celiac, I know first-hand about the challenges that it takes to heal. I am fascinated by the role that the gut has on the brain, and I am passionate about educating others on the link between the two.

Growing up with clinical anxiety, I struggled to do day-to-day things. It was debilitating. Then in high school, I found out I was Celiac which was a blessing in disguise. Having celiac disease meant cleaning up my diet, and with that came a lot of positive lifestyle shifts. I was able to get off of the anxiety medication I'd been on for 10 years! What motivates me is seeing my clients thriving and happy. Their positive feedback and motivation in themselves are what keep me going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, the fact that I did it! The wellness world holds a lot of competition but also a lot of options in which direction to go. Tons of my classmates felt lost after we completed our program, myself included; however, I'd be proud that I didn't stop there and that I dove straight into Hannah's Healthies.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Consistency! Marketing yourself is challenging. There are pros and cons to social media, so navigating that world can also be difficult. Keeping up with my creative side to ensure I sustain an online presence feels like a lot of pressure! The uncertainty of your success can be a bit anxiety-provoking as well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. When any ideas start flowing - jump to jot them down! I find that mine comes to me in the early morning before I get up, so having a notepad beside my bed or even using my phone notes has been super helpful.
  2. Ask for help. It can be daunting starting from scratch, especially for your first run, and maybe even without any experience. The only way to learn is by doing and asking questions, and I am sure there are tons of supportive people around who would feel honoured to help. Don't feel intimidated! If anything, you're complimenting them by asking.
  3. Write down why you're doing this. If you're not 100% passionate about it, you likely won't give it your all.
