Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skin care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hannah Sowd, Founder of Hannah Sowd Skin Care, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Hannah Sowd Skin Care, a skincare studio located in San Francisco, CA, and an online skincare boutique that features virtual skincare consults. My customers are anyone that wants a results-oriented skincare experience or custom home care routine without all the fluff and marketing jargon. My goal is to take the mystery out of skincare and streamline daily routines to achieve the best results.

Tell us about yourself

I started working in the skincare industry over two decades ago because I love it. I suffered from acne in my late teens, and when receiving treatment, I noticed a disconnect between the aesthetics industry and dermatology. I enjoy being able to bridge that gap for clients because I think the best results come from a combined approach. I've been fortunate to work in a variety of settings high-end hotel spa in Beverly Hills, a plastic surgeon's office, and a dermatologist before opening my business in 2012. Educating clients is one of the most rewarding areas of my work. The skincare industry has grown so much over the past decade, and figuring out what works best for your skin can seem overwhelming.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Pivoting my approach while my studio was closed during the first year of the pandemic took a lot of creativity and working outside my comfort zone. Skincare is a high-touch industry, so serving clients virtually was a new challenge.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

When you are in charge of everything, it can be difficult to admit your weaknesses and hire appropriate help. I have a mental block when it comes to the finer details of bookkeeping, so I need an amazing accountant who puts up with my lack of interest in the process!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't monetize your hobby! Keep something in your life just for fun.
  2. Set boundaries with your time and keep them, especially if you have a client-based business.
  3. It will cost more than you think; make sure you have wiggle room with your budget and your profit margins.
