Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hannah Jacobson-Hardy, Founder of Full Moon Ghee, located in Ashfield, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I produce ghee, a clarified butter, from local dairy farms every full moon. My customers are food enthusiasts, chefs, and Ayurvedic wellness practitioners.

Tell us about yourself

I started practicing herbal medicine in 2013, and a friend gave me a jar of homemade ghee for my birthday. It became a staple in my kitchen for cooking, blending into coffee, and adding flavor to rice dishes. I asked my friend if he would make ghee for a farmer's market I was vending at where I sold herbal products. The ghee flew off the shelf, and we quickly expanded.

What motivates me is hearing and seeing the joy my ghee brings to people when they taste it. Knowing I am offering my customers nourishing food on all levels keeps me going. It must be in my blood to want to feed people because it's when I feel most alive.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is building a community around local, healthy food that is made with intention. Yesterday I hosted an open house on our farm where over 50 people came to taste the ghee, sip sun teas, and harvest flowers. I smiled the entire day! Being part of a community that understands what real nourishment means and the connection between food, farms, and each other is very gratifying.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is trusting the ebbs and flows of business which changes seasonally. After almost ten years in business and getting through the pandemic, I feel more confident in my skills as a business owner and the community that values my products.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You must have passion and heart for what you offer; otherwise, when challenges arise, you may doubt yourself and allow the stories to get in the way.
  2. Take wise risks because, as the saying goes, you have to spend money to make money. Your business is a worthy investment, trust yourself and take a leap.
  3. If you wake up every day stressed and afraid, shift your approach or business model. Your business is not meant to weigh you down because people can feel that energy. Let it feed you and your soul, too!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Find a need in your community and fulfill it with integrity. There are ample opportunities out there not only to earn a living but to leave the world in a better place than you found it.
