Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristi Turner, Owner of Hamilton Professional Counseling, located in Noblesville, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hamilton Professional Counseling serves the mental health needs of Hamilton County and surrounding counties. We have a group of therapists that specialize and work within a variety of areas that bring skills to improve the mental health and relationships of our clients. Our clients are individuals that are investing in themselves to achieve the healthiest selves and relationships that they can.

Tell us about yourself

I have always wanted to be in private practice, but I know that to be an effective therapist, a variety of experiences is important. I worked for about 10 years in a crisis unit and emergency departments working with those needing immediate care for their mental health needs. These experiences enriched my development as a mental health professional and have helped me develop an effective and unique style in my current work. I have since had the pleasure of adding many professionals to our team with a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds that help us meet the needs of our clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is a thriving practice that impacts our community's mental health needs in a positive way.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think the hardest part of being a small business owner, no matter your industry, is the 24/7 commitment to excellence for those you serve. Finding the balance between being present in your business and taking care of yourself and your relationships has been the hardest balance to find for me, and I believe many business owners would echo my challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Believe in yourself. You can do hard things, it may not be exactly what you think it looks like, but you can do it.

Be persistent and creative. I think the biggest thing that separates those that thrive and those that don't in building a business is the ability to move forward continually. It's always important to set your goals to guide your growth, but it's also important to be able to pivot when a door closes.

Being creative and persistent in pursuing your end goals is vital. Very few business owners are able to achieve a straight line to success without roadblocks along the way. Learning how to creatively and confidently move around roadblocks is the only way to successfully cross the finish line.
