What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are Jen and Bryan Richard, and we own and operate Hali Cheese Boards which is a cheese board catering service based out of Dartmouth, NS, Canada.
Tell us about yourself
We started in early 2020 with the idea of a side business that quickly took off and is now Bryan’s full-time career, while I (Jen) still work my full-time job in Human Resources while helping him when needed.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We are very proud of our product, and the most satisfying feeling is when someone recognizes us on the street to express how much they enjoyed their last board or that they were at an event we catered to and excited to order for themselves.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest part of owning your own business is knowing which hat to wear, when to wear it, and for how long. There are so many tasks to be completed that if you don’t properly schedule them, you could get lost and find yourself avoiding the things you have to do but don’t want to do.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Jump right in with 2 feet! Once you start and make your first order, product, appointment, etc., you’ll start to see everything that comes along with it, and you might realize it’s simply not for you, or you’ll ask yourself why you didn’t get started sooner. The best way to know if you can do something is to try!
