Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Haley Cobran, Owner of Haley Cobran Photography, located in Brampton, ON, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a creative portrait, branding, and family photographer. I truly enjoy creating clean and fresh images that show off the best in every client. Creating a bond with my clients is my #1 goal. With that, I can know exactly what you need and you are comfortable showing off who you are in front of the camera as well.

Tell us about yourself

I fell in love with photography in my second year of university and started my business right after graduation. I was, and I am always motivated by others around me who express their love for my work. I am motivated by my clients who receive their photos and are extremely happy with them. When they print their family photos and put them up in their house or post their business profile on their social media, they get the response and reactions they were hoping for. These results and reactions are truly what keeps me going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment would have to be traveling for work. One of my goals as a photographer is to be able to provide quality service not only for locals but for many brands outside my local community. This year was the first time I was able to do that (both photography and videography services). I truly enjoyed it and hope to do more in the future.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, I have to always be in tune with the various changes that happen within the industry and social media. It can get quite draining in the long run. But it’s rewarding when I can connect with new people as a result. I am also the photographer, editor, bookkeeper and administrator, accountant, and anything else you can possibly need to run a business. It’s a lot of work for a small business, but with the right mentality and perseverance, everything gets done!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, find something you are very passionate about. At the end of the day, it’s now always about the money; it’s about what you like to do. If you don’t like it, you won’t be able to push forward through the difficult times!

Second, find a mentor who is doing what you want to do. Their help will be great, and you might not have to go through minor inconveniences that someone starting from scratch with no help would go through. Don’t be afraid to invest in education, whether it be a mentor, a course to help you learn to record your finances, or even a general business course. Every bit of education can help you and your business thrive in the future.

Third, set clear goals for where you want your business to go! If you have something to strive towards, you will make sure you get there!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being a business owner is not always easy, but it is rewarding to achieve the goals you set for yourself.
