Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anna Orn, Owner of Hair Addiction Salon, located in Fargo, ND, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a full-service salon specializing in Salty Locks Hair Extensions. Our hybrid team includes 5 employees (massage therapists and hair stylists) and 15 independent hair stylists/estheticians. Our ideal clientele is anyone who is looking to improve their confidence! Look good. Feel Good!

Tell us about yourself

I attended The Salon Professional Academy right after graduating from high school. Upon completion, I worked as a commissioned stylist for two years. I went on to booth rent from there. I have always absolutely loved what I do, but around 2019, I started to feel like I was coasting and couldn't grow anymore as an independent stylist. As a new mother, I knew that I wanted more for myself, my newborn, and my husband. Working with clients is a blessing, but I wanted to do more of the business side. With my husband's blessing, the hair Addiction Salon business plan came to life! I signed a lease in March 2020 (yes, right before COVID shut down salons). In June 2020, my dream salon opened with only 2 stylists contracted. It was frustrating, but I trusted the process, and we grew! in the spring of 2022, we expanded our 11-suite salon to 18 suites! We currently have 20 professionals working at Hair Addiction Salon. What motivates me, besides family, is the joy I see on my client's faces after they get their first hair extension installed and they finally have hair they have only ever dreamed of!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In a matter of 2.5 years, I have managed to fill all of the salon suites, and expand another 1800 square feet to add more suites. I also hired 4 employees in 2022. One of my greatest accomplishments so far is creating a team environment and striving to support each other professionally and personally.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think I speak for any business owner when I say TIME MANAGEMENT. It is extremely hard for a stylist to stay on time and get out of work on time, but as a stylist and business owner, it's impossible. Balancing being a mother, wife, and business owner is not for the meek.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a business plan, and don't lie to yourself when you create it.
  2. Set large goals but make sure to use stepping stones along the way.
  3. Never be "too busy" to network.
