Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lindsay McDermott, Chief Happiness Officer of Habit Nest, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

You know those times that you're like, "I know I can do better in life," but it feels too overwhelming or insanely expensive to figure out where to start? That's the problem we strive to solve. Our journals are a hybrid of deeply researched articles and self-help information combined with daily guided journaling to help folks establish good habits like a morning routine, meditation, gratitude, budgeting, and a ton more. We also have an entire suite of at-home and in-gym prescribed workouts and trackers to keep you motivated.

Tell us about yourself

Who doesn't love talking about themselves? 🤣 At Habit Nest, I have been officially dubbed Chief Happiness Officer, and I strive to live up to that title in my job and my life. I'm a mom to 6 kids between 13 and 17, including twins and two teen brothers that we recently adopted. I am a helper through and through, and that is what brought me to Habit Nest. I was the first employee here several years ago and hadn't looked back since. It fulfills my need to help people, especially those who are striving to find a better existence for themselves, as I am continually doing so myself.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Although I don't own this business, I have complete ownership and accountability over my part in our success. As a go-to person for the cofounders, I am proud of my ability to step outside my comfort zone in order to further our business. With absolute support and encouragement from Mikey, Ari, and Amir (the cofounders), I have helped create a distinct welcoming community among our customers that strive to challenge each other.

As a business, one major accomplishment was winning Amazon's Top Small Business of the Year award. We have also been purchased for student use in higher learning facilities and featured in publications such as Harvard Business Review, Inc., Glamour, and many others.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having so many balls in the air is a big one. Especially when so many of them are important at any given moment, it's even more essential to know when to delegate, handle, and let it drop for a bit. Thankfully, our co-owners are deeply involved, and our team, which has grown to over ten employees) are all extremely talented, autonomous, and motivated individuals.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be comfortable with ambiguity. There are certain things you should have a clear path on but be prepared for a lot of unknowns. As you start to solidify your plan and implement your business, you'll become increasingly skilled at pivoting, adapting, and pushing onward. Just expect that it's part of the journey!
  2. Push through to the other side. As with habit-building or accomplishing anything difficult, you're going to feel really excited at the beginning. No matter who you are, there will be a time when you lose that motivation. Acknowledge that feeling and where it comes from, use it as a way to reflect on what you can change (if anything), but keep pushing forward.
  3. If you're not playing, you're not going to stick with it. There will always be an aspect of "the grind" to any business, but if you're not feeling like you're playing a game, if you're not really passionate about what you're doing, maybe it isn't the right thing to do.
