Tell us about yourself

The reason "why" I started this business is right in the name itself -- H & L! I have always had an interest in making my own bath and body products for personal use, but after becoming a mom of two sons, Henry & Luke, I really began to research what ingredients went into all of our household products. That's when I decided to take my passion for natural skincare and create products that did not have all the harsh additives and skin irritants I found in commercial products. I'm motivated by my passion for natural products as well as by setting an example for my sons to work hard and not give up on their dreams!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been pushing myself to step out of my comfort zone. I have always wanted to start a business, but actually, taking the leap is easier said than done. I am very happy to have created this business from the ground up and have learned so much along the way.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is time management. It can definitely be a struggle juggling my responsibilities as a business owner with my responsibilities as a mom and wife some days. Keeping a consistent schedule that allows time for both (and my time, too!) is such a game changer, but so hard to do consistently.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ask questions. I've found most peers and business owners love sharing stories about their tips, successes, failures, and lessons. It really is a community of support, and most people would love to help.
  2. Embrace mistakes. It's so hard as a business owner, and especially as a perfectionist, to really absorb this tip, but it's true. If you truly embrace your mistakes and use them as learning tools, you'll inevitably be better the next time you try.
  3. Take a break. It's ok to walk away and take a break from your business. It's too easy to burn out from pushing too hard. Taking a break to regroup and come back refreshed allows you to remember why you're doing this in the first place.
