Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alex Jackson, Founder and Owner of h clothing co., located in Colorado Springs, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

h clothing co offers 100% natural, handmade, hand-dyed clothing and HomeGoods from primarily hemp fabrics. All h clothing co products come with lifetime free repairs because we want your clothes and home goods to last as long as possible. At the end of their life, they will biodegrade naturally. Our customers are sick of fast fashion and plastic clothing. They're looking for high-quality natural clothing that will last them a lifetime.

Tell us about yourself

I've always loved the outdoors: hiking, camping, skiing, snowboarding, etc. There's a long story about what got me into this, but I'll put it simply: I learned how badly our clothing is hurting the planet and the people that make it. Once I fell down this rabbit hole, I decided to try and do something about it. This company isn't about a payout for me at the end of the day; it's about making grassroots changes to one of the largest and most harmful industries in the world and teaching consumers that there's a way to consume better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think just starting was and may forever be my biggest accomplishment. There's a lot of self-doubt and vagueness that goes into starting a company and brand, but I'm so thankful to my family and friends for supporting me and proud of myself for taking the plunge.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time management. This is currently my second job, and up until recently, I was juggling my master's degree education as well. Giving enough time to family, friends, community, work, education, and play is a constant challenge and something I am still constantly working on.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Follow your passions. Whatever it is you love to do, try to figure out how you can make a living from it (as long as it doesn't kill your passion for that thing).
  2. Just start. Whatever it is you want to do, start today. Even as a business major, I didn't have a concrete business plan when I started h clothing co. I simply started sewing clothing for myself, my wife, and my friends.
  3. Set your values early on and stick to them without compromise.
