What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the founder of GYSB®, a health and fitness movement for women. I am a health and fitness enthusiast, jump rope fitness coach, author, and podcast host of the GYSBtalks podcast.
Tell us about yourself
In 2008, I was in an unhealthy relationship. Over the nearly 3 years of our relationship, I lost a lot of my vibrant self. My joy and happiness were buried in sadness, and my self-worth was so low that I accepted the poor treatment and disrespect and even started to blame myself for the position I was in. Then one day, it hit me! I needed to rise up out of my self-pity and do something to regain my dignity and self-respect. So, I set out on a journey to lose weight and take better control of my physical, mental, and emotional health. After a 50lbs weight loss success, I started GYSB® (Get Your Sexy Back), a lifestyle and wellness brand created to encourage women to adopt a balanced approach to living well by focusing on the physical, spiritual, financial, and emotional aspects of wellness. GYSB® is a commitment to self-love for the woman who is truly looking to make significant life changes from the inside out.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Starting the GYSBtalks podcast for women over 50. I saw a need for more voices, stories, and information to help inspire more women in midlife to live FULLY! Life doesn't stop at 50. There are more beautiful experiences we have yet to live through. Some of us are just afraid or don't know how. With the GYSBtalks podcast, we bring guests on who will help us continue to grow and elevate our mental and physical health, emotional intelligence, and in our finances. The goal is optimal living and getting our "sexy" back in any area of our lives that needs a little extra focus.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I would say time management is one of the hardest things. Some of us are full-time entrepreneurs, and others are still working full-time jobs while building our businesses. Because I fall into the latter, marketing my e-book and branded jump ropes, getting podcast guests, recording, editing, and promoting the podcast, teaching jump rope fitness classes, and managing all my social media accounts --all while working as a Director of Development for a nonprofit --is challenging.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure you have systems in place to track your revenue and expenses.
- Collect emails and build an email list so that you do not depend solely on social media. FB, IG, TikTok, and YouTube could go away at any time. You want to be in control of your data.
- Find a community of women who are focused on building their businesses and sharing information. You do not have to, and should not, do this alone.
