Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Adebola Adewumi, Owner of GYMGUYZ SW Portland, located in Beaverton, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

GYMGUYZ is proud to be the first in-home mobile personal training and fitness franchise company. As the leader of in-home personal training, we’re redefining physical fitness by bringing the workout to you when and where it’s convenient for you. Professional and certified trainers bring the instruction and the equipment, and they ensure every workout is customized for you depending on your fitness level and specific goals.

The GYMGUYZ team is known for creating convenient, customized, and creative workouts for each individual client. By incorporating our philosophy of these three C’s into every fitness activity plan, we are able to bring our personal training services to people at any fitness level. Our certified personal trainers are experts in using GYMGUYZ methodologies, and they employ various techniques and tools to ensure that no two workouts are ever the same. We make sure that workouts are always fun and challenging. Our customers are anyone who wants to improve their health and fitness but doesn’t have time or doesn’t want to go to the gym.

Tell us about yourself

Even though I worked in a very corporate Engineering and Manufacturing organization, I was fortunate enough to be able to share this at work. In 2012 I helped start up the Intel Aloha site group fitness program, and my ‘coaching’ ranges from leading corporate fitness classes to coaching elite youth basketball. I’ve designed and led workouts for multiple age groups (from 5 to 75+) and believe that almost anyone can partake in this style of training, and it can be modified for any fitness level to improve work and everyday life. I have a two-fold passion. First is to help and improve the lives of others, and second, health, fitness, and sports. I know firsthand how a good workout regimen can improve the life of corporate (office-dwelling) employees, and I am now sharing this knowledge with many others. I hope to help make the Portland/Vancouver metro area a healthier place and to drive GYMGUYZ to be a household name while doing it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Not only surviving but growing through Covid and winning the 2021 comeback franchise of the year award.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time. Since it’s my business, success is partially driven by how much time I put into it. It seems there are never enough hours in the day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire good people. Your business will only do as good as the people involved in the day-to-day.
  2. Spend time to work ON the business, not just IN the business.
  3. Take time for yourself. Health and fitness are very important.
