Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittney Cox, owner of Growing Nutrition, located in London, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Registered Holistic Nutritionist who prioritizes nourishing, whole foods but also foods that are good for the soul like pad thai, pizza, and pasta. I work with busy moms who struggle to get a healthy meal on the table in time for their family to eat and move on to their next activity. With kids, life moves at lightning speed, but that doesn't mean you have to forgo healthy meals. I also work with families on real-life strategies to decrease picky eating and increase kids' curiosity and independence in the kitchen while also fueling busy parents for their day.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up as an athlete, no one talked to me about health or nutrition. I thought I was healthy because I was active, but really I had no idea the role that food played in my life. After struggling with my relationship with food, I realized that finding my own balance of being able to enjoy all foods, but prioritizing the ones that made me feel the best, was incredibly important. Once I found that food freedom, I wanted others to have that too.

Now, as a busy mom of two young boys, I understand the challenges of feeding yourself quality ingredients while also feeding your family, meal planning, grocery shopping, and finding foods they enjoy. It is a lot, and it is overwhelming for most families. But I feel so strongly that it doesn't have to be hard. You can make healthy meals in 20 minutes or less, and there are strategies you can use to create more peaceful mealtimes with the whole family.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is the accomplishments of my clients, whether it's a busy mom prioritizing her own fuel, so she has enough energy to finish the day or a family struggling with picky eaters and what to feed their kids finally finding the strategies and language that work for happier meals. Or even a client introducing solids to their baby for the first time and witnessing their confidence grow, knowing they are setting their little one up for success right from an early age. It's a gift to be part of.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is the feeling that the work is never done. This is exciting when you think of all the potential of what you can accomplish, but setting boundaries to protect time with family is also very important. When the passion is there, along with the business ownership, it can be hard to truly turn it off and step away.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself with the right people. Find people who motivate, encourage, challenge, and support you. Find people that you look up to and ask them questions, get curious and supportive. Community over competition is incredibly important.
  2. Always be open to learning. Entrepreneurship comes with many ups and downs. It's not a straight path, and it's nearly impossible to predict exactly what your path will look like. Be open to learn from others, learn from your wins but learn even more from your mistakes. Be humble in your approach and keep learning.
  3. Remember your why. Some days you're on top of the world, and others, you're self-doubting, asking yourself why you started in the first place. But if you are truly connected to the reason behind your business, what you know you can offer to your community, and the value you bring, that will always keep pushing you forward.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Enjoy the ride! It's an amazing journey in self-discovery, and I wouldn't change it for the world.
