Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food & beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Josh Phelps, Founder of Grounded Wine, Co., located in St. Helena, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a CA-based wine business with operations in CA, OR, and WA. We primarily focus on affordable wine. We are targeting a younger audience, although I believe our wines are meant for everyone.

Tell us about yourself

I was born and raised in Napa Valley, so I have been around wine for a long time. I started my first wine company at 23. I sold my equity in that company about five years ago and then launched Grounded Wine Co. (at age 30). I love the wine business and business in general so staying motivated is not an issue for me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That is a tough question. I would say probably making and delivering a really high-quality product at an affordable price. Grounded Wine Co. makes wine very accessible, and I think we can therefore make a lot of people happy.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing a brand that is growing quickly while juggling the finances and all the other stresses that come along with it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get lots of experience in the field first.
  2. Do not rush into business ownership.
  3. Find the right people to join your team.
