Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Zarah Hofer, co-founder of Grounded Rootz Nutrition, located in Bowen Island, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help endurance athletes and weekend warriors take the mystery and confusion out of nutrition to boost their energy and crush their fitness goals.

Tell us about yourself

As an endurance athlete and working professional, my passion lies in helping my clients find simple nutrition strategies that work for their full lives. My goal is to demystify and simplify nutrition by focusing on the four foundations (nutrition, sleep, stress, and movement).

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Actually starting a business and seeing my clients. Prior to starting my business, I have always been an employee, and becoming an entrepreneur these past months has been challenging but also hugely rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Putting myself out there. I am still uncomfortable talking about myself and my services confidently and succinctly. I'm still working on this every day, and it has gotten easier with practice!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stick with it! There were many times when I completely understood why people abandoned their small businesses. It's hard, and I felt so far out of my comfort zone on many occasions.
  2. Show up! Even if all you can dedicate is an hour a day, just by showing up, you are making progress one step at a time.
  3. Ask for help! There were so many things that I had to learn. I had to accept that I didn't always have the time or the patience to learn everything, so I looked for other small businesses to support me with their expertise.
