Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Drew Donaldson, Founder and CEO of GroHaus, located in Richland, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

GroHaus is a one-of-a-kind Growth Strategy firm dedicated to helping early-stage, growth-stage, and scale-stage entrepreneurs run more effective and efficient businesses. We provide hands-on coaching, consulting, and fractional services in the areas of marketing, operations, and customer experience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've been able to grow my business to a point where my wife was able to leave her desk job and be a stay-at-home mom for our 6-month-old daughter. No award will feel better than knowing that I'm able to take care of both of them.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

In the early days, you spend a lot more time than you'd like working inside your business, and that often means missing out on things that 9-5ers take for granted. Vacations, paid benefits, and the ability to maintain a social life are all things you sacrifice in pursuit of your goals. While some are easier to abstain from than others. It's usually the small things that hurt the most. Not being able to take a personal day without consequence when I'm under the weather or knowing exactly what my paycheck will be. Those are the things you notice the most when you start working for yourself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Your story is where it all starts. Focus on telling a great one.
  2. Websites are the foundation of your marketing effort, invest at least $5k in building a good site and make sure it is built on a platform you can operate yourself. Don't get suckered in low-cost website leasing services that promise a low monthly fee to do everything for you. It's a scam. Just read the fine print.
  3. Paid media is your friend. You'll spend the same amount if you pay $5/day for a month or $15/ day for ten days. The only difference is how quickly you'll see results. You can always make more money, but you can't make more time. Spend both wisely.
