What's your business, and who are your customers?
GreenIsland Bakery is an Irish and European Specialty Bakery in DC.
Our direct customers can purchase gift boxes on our online store that can be shipped nationwide. These have also been very popular for corporate gifting.
GreenIsland Bakery specializes in an Irish shortbread range that is sold in multiple retail stores. Additionally, we have formed various partnerships with nonprofit organizations to serve the local community.
Tell us about yourself
I was a Sales Director and had been helping European companies expand in the Americas for many years. I knew I wanted to use my business development experience, form my own company, and create something meaningful to help others in need.
From a young age and my mother taught me how to bake. She was a cookery teacher and had her own cake business. My grandmothers also inspired me with their delicious desserts, so I use these family recipes that have been handed down through generations. Sharing a taste of Ireland and carrying on our family legacy.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Launching products into retail and meeting people who turn out to be customers. Teaming up with organizations to offer baking classes to female trauma survivors and the marginalized.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Many sacrifices have to be made to make the business successful. It demands a lot of time, energy, and determination.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Stick to what you're good at.
- Follow your passion.
- Connect with mentors, advisors, and entrepreneurs who have already achieved what you want to achieve. Be willing to listen, learn, take notes and adapt.
