Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in a dance school but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sydney Larson, Owner of Greater Impact Dance, located in Lincoln, NE, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Greater Impact Dance is a dance studio in Lincoln, Nebraska. We are a second home to dancers, ranging from 18 months to 18 years, and their families. Our passion is instilling confidence, fostering friendships, and helping students meet their dance goals. We lead positively, professionally, and with an abundance of love.

Tell us about yourself

I've been dancing since I could walk--that "on top of the world" feeling when I'm dancing is a feeling that should be shared and experienced by everyone. That's where Greater Impact Dance was born. Everyone deserves the opportunity to feel good in their bodies and grow in self-confidence that propels them into the rest of their life and whatever they choose to conquer during it. The discipline and art of dance truly unleash that for our students. Knowing that truth and wanting that feeling for everyone is what keeps us going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I started my business at 22 with a baby on my hip. From sixty to one hundred and sixty students, we've come far in 7 years and continue to thrive. Navigating covid, raising a family, and pouring everything you have into a small business is no easy feat. But we are here and as passionate as ever.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The balancing act, hands down. We walk a tightrope of juggling work life, personal life, family life, and our mental and physical health. Needing to fit 60 hours' worth of work and time with your husband and kids into any given week is exhausting. Balancing personal and customer relationships is a tricky one too, understanding that you'll never make every person happy, no matter how badly you want to.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be ready to struggle.
  2. Ask for help before you need it.
  3. Do everything you can to never make the same mistake twice.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Owning a business is tough-- expect hard things and stay humble and thankful when things come easy. There is a lot of joy in knowing you're leaving a Greater Impact.
