Caring Solutions - Grannie on the Move

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in consultancy but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stacy Gunnerson, Owner of Grannie on the Move, located in Meridian, ID, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Grannie on the Move, we help seniors get the care they need and the financial solutions to pay for it.

Tell us about yourself

I have been working with seniors for more than 20 years. My interest in this field was sparked by the experiences I had with my own grandparents while growing up. My great-grandfather had Alzheimer's and passed away the summer I graduated from high school. During that time, I left home to attend college and began working as a CNA in the local nursing home's Alzheimer's unit. It was there that I discovered my love for working with this population.

I later obtained my administrator's license to run a facility. Throughout my professional career in senior living, I've held various positions, ranging from caregiver to Vice President of Operations.

In 2019, I started Grannie on the Move because I recognized that seniors needed a single resource they could call for assistance throughout the entire process of finding the care they deserve.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Surviving and thriving in 2020 in a healthcare business was a big feat!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I was a VP of a much larger organization with an executive team and middle management. Now, running my own business, it's just me and six employees. I find it much harder to manage staff with six employees because it is such an intimate environment, and I don't have an HR dept, a CFO, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Are you willing to put in the time? You may work much harder to make much less at first. It takes time.
  2. Write out your Mission statement and Values first, then use this to create your policies and procedures.
  3. Don't hire friends and family.
