Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tessa Lowe, founder of Grace of Life Doula, located in Converse, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Grace of Life Doula currently offers placenta encapsulation services in San Antonio and surrounding areas. I support pregnant and postpartum mamas by turning their placenta into consumable capsules to assist in recovering after birth!

Tell us about yourself

I’m a mom of 3, wife, and veteran. I decided to become a doula after attending a birth just as a supportive family member. I decided to work with placentas after having my own encapsulated. I love being able to give moms a better chance and smoother transition into motherhood/adding a baby to the family. Encapsulation has a ton of benefits for postpartum moms, and I’m happy to facilitate the usage of those benefits!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I’m still just starting out, but I do come highly recommended by local midwives and birth workers. I’m always so happy, grateful, and proud of myself every time I get a client referral from one of the local birth workers because these are people that genuinely care for their clients and wouldn’t recommend me if they didn’t think I’d be best for that client!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Definitely finding the motivation to keep going. The days where I’m overwhelmed or burnt out or maybe my kids are having a rough week, and I just want to hide away and give up. I’ve had to teach myself how to give myself grace and rest and how to prioritize instead of jumping ship.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do something you love; you’ll find yourself being more motivated to be exceptional!
  2. Do it all the way, or don’t do it at all; no one appreciates mediocrity.
  3. Never stop finding ways to set yourself apart in quality, creativity, and service!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don’t be afraid to evolve, change directions, or slow down. You’re in control, and those changes can be such a game-changer in taking your service from something you like doing to something you love doing. That transition will translate to your clients as well!
