Tell us about yourself

I'm Kathryne Carter, owner/planner of Grace And Virtue Events. I am originally from Harlem, NY and now love living in the DMV area. I love planning and coordinating events, especially when it comes to managing logistics and details, being creative, and managing solutions. I have a 15-year background in Special Education, working with individuals with disabilities and supporting them and their families with accessing their community, identifying goals, and learning work skills. I started planning when I planned my mother and stepfather's wedding in 2009. I'm passionate about supporting my clients by having unique and intimate experiences. I love being creative and doing things outside of the box that is meaningful to my clients while preserving some traditional wedding components.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My business will be in its 5th year in August 2023. Starting my business was a great accomplishment, but continuing to grow the business over these last 4 years has been a great accomplishment. I love seeing my goals for my business grow and change and how I have grown and changed with my business. I am looking forward to the next 5 years and the years after that!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There is always something to learn as a business owner. It is sometimes challenging to keep up with everything that must be done to maintain, grow and develop a business. Owning a business is challenging because of the things I don't know. But I am grateful for the lessons learned over the years, and I look forward to continuing to learn how to run my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do what you can; it won't get done in one day.
  2. Not every task/strategy/advice is something you HAVE to do. Do what works best for you & your business.
  3. Ask questions and ask for help. You are not alone. There are so many things you will need to do as a business owner. Take it one day at a time; if you cannot have a team in the beginning, it is ok. Learn how to run the business so that when you do have a team, you can teach them how your business operates. You can't do all the things at once; take the time to learn and make changes. It is ok to make adjustments to make things better; it is not necessarily a mistake.
