Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Peter Fehr, Owner of Gourmet Inspirations, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a gourmet food manufacturer based in Southeast Manitoba, about 1-hour drive south of Winnipeg. Our customers are fine food stores, gourmet butchers, home decor shops, gift shops, and tourist shops.
Tell us about yourself
We're here to help home cooks who are bored of the same old discover new spices and sauces to create tantalizing meals and feel like chefs in their own kitchens! I was born with a love for cooking. In high school and beyond, I fine-tuned this craft by studying culinary arts. Most recently, I worked at a remote 5-star fly-in fishing resort in Northern Canada, where I made a creamy peppercorn whisky steak sauce for one of our dinners. We had a guest from Texas who loved it and told me, "You need to put that in a bottle and sell it"! And the rest is history... What motivates me?... I love to see how I can help people feel like chefs in their own kitchens. Also that I am able to help facilitate connection amongst people over good food!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We were featured as one of the top 10 new food products in 2018 by "Food in Canada" magazine. We had our products featured at a luxury gifting suite at the Academy Awards a few years back!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Shutting the brain off is the hardest...lol. It seems that the brain is always thinking!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Try very hard to keep balance. Keep healthy relationships outside of your work!
- Rest. If you don't take time for this, you will burn out!
- Don't give up. I was once told by a successful retired businessperson, "It will probably take you twice as long as you think it will to grow your business to where you want it... but it should hopefully be twice as profitable as well!"
