Spooky and Zen Elements - Goth Yoga

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christi Workman, Owner of Goth Yoga, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Goth Yoga is a celebrated alternative pop-up yoga practice and boutique that introduces dark themes, curiosities of the macabre, and unique ways of self-expression. The boutique combines spooky and zen elements. I have a line of branded apparel and handmade products. My product line is a variety of decor, one-of-a-kind jewelry, accessories, and an intoxicating fragrance line of candles, oils, and bath products.

Where do you find these amazing products, you ask? The best place to see Goth Yoga is by attending one of the events we vend. You will find us throughout Texas and beyond at alternative night markets, horror film conventions, oddities & curiosities, music festivals, and magical artisan markets.

Tell us about yourself

I am best known in Houston as a Renaissance woman, from my training in specialty martial arts and aerobic fitness to my history in the city’s deep underground music culture. Former lead screamer of 90's Texas Horror punk band, “StinkerBell,” one of the founding members of the Houston Roller Derby, and co-owner of SugarHill Recording Studio from 1996 – 2017, I have spent my career at the forefront of Houston’s underground culture in music and fitness.

Featured in FOX’s Flip Side TV show, Flipside Magazine, Public News, Houston Press, and several other underground rags throughout the US and overseas, I am known for my unique mix of underground garage, punk, gothic culture, and fitness. After years of experience practicing Tai Chi, Krav Maga, Cardio Kickboxing, Pilates, and Yoga, I opened up my fitness studio in 2014. Following that success, I launched my popup yoga and apparel-focused business, Goth Yoga, introducing a new way of practicing yoga to the Houston fitness industry.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I haven't really thought about my biggest accomplishment and am not even sure I have reached it. I always see room for improvement. Knowing that I found the right audience for my products and services is the key to my current success.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner means being responsible for the company's success. Running the show means wearing a few different hats. I don't always enjoy each of the hats.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Manifest what you want - write it down, and be proactive.
  2. See others as mentors, not competitors.
  3. Start small and provide room for growth.
