What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the owner of an Eastern European café located in the heart of Point St. Charles. We attract customers from all over the city, mainly those who want to learn and taste authentic Eastern European culture, but also, I am happy to say we have been lucky to establish a strong presence within the local community, serving as a pierogi and sandwich hub.
Tell us about yourself
I was born and raised in Poland in a family of bakers, so growing up, food played a very important role in my life. After moving to Canada, I felt the need to create a space that would not only represent my traditions but also provide a venue for people to gather, exchange ideas, and have fun. Fun should always be accompanied by flavorful food. The community that gets to enjoy our café and support us on a daily basis is the biggest motivation possible. For them, we exist.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being able to assemble a team of wonderful, dedicated individuals who regard the café as a second home. We are like a family, and we treat our regular customers as an extension of this family.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being able to balance work and personal life is a must. Running a successful business takes a lot of time, energy, and commitment, especially at the beginning. With time, the organization and daily tasks become easier, but there are still periods when certain sacrifices need to be made.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do not be afraid to try.
- Stay prolific; growth never happens overnight.
- Enjoy the journey; it is important to have fun along the way.
