What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have owned Auction Solutions for 23 years. I decided to add additional services based on my area of expertise in 2019, so I expanded to add Senior and Specialty Move Services to my offerings. I joined the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers. I hung my shingle to provide a complete solution to moving Elders, as well as liquidation of their assets. I am licensed for Real Estate, Vehicles, Firearms, and Auctioneer, so the additional pieces to the services came naturally. I also patented the process and am offering Franchises Nationwide. This assists entrepreneurs in fast starting their Senior Move Business, be a part of a large corporation, and provide connections nationwide to work together on state-to-state moves.
Tell us about yourself
I was in Sales and Marketing for many years, specializing in Executive Search and Recruitment. The Auction Business called to me as it was male-dominated, and the challenge was there to build something from nothing. In 23 years, I have liquidated assets for Household, Business, Landmarks, and Benefit Auctions. I have gained knowledge of the Community needs of Seniors. They need assistance in planning and executing a move more than ever as it is increasingly difficult to get all the siblings in a family in one place at the same time. We handle the details for the move, the liquidation, and Real Estate to allow the siblings, if any, to spend time with their family members. We take the stress off the project, and the parent is moved quickly, effectively, and adjusting to their new space. New Beginnings Start with Us!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The most important thing to me has been to learn something new every day and to be open to new concepts and ideas as they become apparent. You can't be so set in your ways that you miss an opportunity to switch up what you are doing based on the ever-changing needs of your clients. Growth comes from the ability to see a revenue enhancement and be flexible enough to integrate it into your processes quickly while monetizing the process.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As a Business owner of several businesses, I would say the hardest thing to do is let go and appoint a manager to manage. You have to do this, however, in order to enable yourself to focus on the big picture and grow another branch or business. Staying in the day-to-day when you have capable managers will not help them prove what you hired them to do. They need oversight, and you must allow them to grow and mature into the role they have been given. The employees they manage must also be made to report directly to this Manager, and ending their reporting to you is a must.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Be passionate about your business, and learn as much as you can before you open your doors. Utilize every business enterprise growth group you can. Attend their meetings, and visit with others who attend. Know who in your area does what. A referral to another company generates income for you both. Cooperate, and it will come back to you. Keep your details to yourself, and be Confidential. Your world is smaller than you think, and it pays to always praise another, no matter what.
