What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a website with information and resources for parents who are home educating their children. I have done academic research in that field and education in general and have included some of those papers on the site. I also provide coaching services for parents who want to home educate and help them with their goals and 'why's.'
Tell us about yourself
I was a high school teacher in the classroom for 14 years and a school principal for 2 years. When my son was in grade 3, I realized that the school system was doing him more harm than good, so I pulled him out to home-educate him. As a result, I was asked to take a different position the following year and support other home educators. When COVID hit, and people were scrambling to find resources and help, I was already well set up to provide help to them and spent a very busy summer on the phone and email, supporting new home educators. The frenzy has died down, but the support is still there for those who need it.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think the connections I have made all over Canada and the USA are one of the biggest accomplishments I have made, as I started out knowing almost nothing and grew my network very quickly. I am grateful to be able to help so many people.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think it's the unsureness of it all. To be an entrepreneur, you must be willing to take risks, which can be difficult.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start talking to everyone about anything. Get your name out there.
- Join Facebook pages and networks that are related to your field and don't advertise but just offer advice to people (if that's appropriate to your field). Get your name known before you start advertising.
- Be an example of what others want to be in any way you can but stay humble. Be honest
