Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stacy Holland, Owner of Zia Dutch Farm’s “Goatee Goat Goat Soap”, located in Bellville, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a combination of artisan small batch goat milk soap, goat livestock, and goat conservation.

Tell us about yourself

I started making soap because we have a lot of skin allergies. Goat milk is a wonderful source for sensitive skin. Through trial and error, I have been able to find herbs and carrier oils that have added benefits for all types of skin. I am motivated to produce a product that is both healthy and natural.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Repeat customers! So many people have returned to my website, the Farmers Market, and my house to purchase my soaps. I even have a family that has continued to buy baby Nigerian Dwarf goats from my herd.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Predicting the future! Seriously, soaps I thought would be popular were not. The learning curve was pretty high.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Do it! You are taking the first step by simply making your product/services available. Find a mentor for the areas you aren’t confident in completing. For instance, I needed help with inventory control for my website, so I turned to a friend that works in the field. Most importantly, “Do it,” take the first step.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I am currently in the beginning stages of creating a conservation herd of Arapawa Goats. They are a critically endangered breed for which I am excited to be a part of preserving the genetic diversity and begin making soap utilizing their milk.
