Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jorge Gonzalez, Founder of Go Gonzalez BBQ, located in London, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a Tex-mix BBQ restaurant with a Latin twist, catering to customers across Ontario. Our reputation precedes us wherever we go, including competitions such as Ribfest.

Tell us about yourself

Do you have the motivation to strive for personal growth and achievement with the hope of leaving a legacy for your children? I am a father of two, and providing them with the best possible future has been my driving force. Despite facing numerous hardships alongside my wife and kids, we never gave up as a team. We persevered through the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and successfully developed a franchise. Though venturing out on our own presented many obstacles, each of these hurdles taught us valuable lessons in both business and life. We are still facing difficulties, but we see each one as an opportunity for growth and advancement in our business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

After nearly 14 years of perfecting our menu and creating what we believe is the best barbecue sauce around, our franchise's first location opened for takeout. Fast forward to 2022, and we have won first place at Ribfest seven years in a row.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

What strategies do you use to keep your business afloat? There are countless factors that can go wrong, such as a lack of working capital, insufficient staffing, or a shortage of funds for marketing. The list of potential problems is endless and could easily cause one to give up. However, it's important to stay focused on your goals, both in life and in business, like an eagle zeroing in on its target. It's also important to remember where you come from.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Never give up.
  2. Investing something, there is already approved to work.
  3. You got to enjoy what you do; even making your money is a win and business and in life.
