Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Angie Kim, Owner of Glow Up MD, located in Katy, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a physician and owner of Glow Up MD Medical Aesthetics and Wellness Practice. I help those in my local community of Katy, Texas, learn more about their skin and set them on the right path to achieving healthy skin. Glow Up MD medspa is all about giving you the confidence to step out of your comfort zone and achieve your goals, whether it's landing your dream job or getting that promotion. Your appearance plays a big role in how you present yourself, and we want you to be able to put your best foot forward. We offer a variety of nonsurgical aesthetic treatments to help prevent and reverse signs of aging, aid in weight loss, improve your quality of life, and improve your skincare routine!

Tell us about yourself

Starting my own business was an intimidating prospect. But after completing medical training, I realized that working for someone else, especially in the current healthcare system, was not what I wanted for my life. I refuse to be controlled by people without medical education, so I decided to take a chance on myself. I had no background in business and had to navigate legal regulations, insurance requirements, and financial planning on my own. But with determination and persistence, I was able to set up a successful brick-and-mortar practice within just a few months. I'm motivated each day by the freedom I now have in practicing medicine the way it should be practiced. I can spend as much time as I need to with patients. I don't need to spend extra time trying to fight insurance companies. And my patients have been happy with their results.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've realized how aesthetic treatments can transform a patient's appearance and boost their self-confidence. Many people were unhappy with their physical appearance, and these procedures have helped them feel better about themselves, leading to a positive impact on their mental health. My biggest accomplishment is being able to make a difference in these people's lives.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As of right now, the biggest challenge we're facing is marketing and getting the word out. We are still trying to figure out the best way to do this. It has been mostly through trial and error. We are constantly trying different strategies, such as Facebook ads, in-person events, local SEO, local media and print, and direct mailing. You can have everything else in place and ready, but without the right marketing, you still won't get far.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. There is never a perfect time to start a business. The best way to learn is by doing.
  2. People are always going to doubt you when you start, especially those closest to you. You can't let that get to you. If it's what you really want and you can't stop thinking about it, then you should go for it. It's going to be lonely and somewhat isolating when you start, but it'll be worth it.
  3. I believe there's always a way to solve a problem. If you feel like you've hit a roadblock, try looking at the problem from a different perspective.
