Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kat Duff, Founder of Glotanicals, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own Glotanicals, a sustainable skincare company that serves eco-conscious beauty lovers.

Tell us about yourself

My passion for the environment and frustration with the beauty industry is what inspired me to start Glotanicals in 2019. At the time, I was living in Australia and was face to face with climate change for the first time when the country was going through the worst bushfires in history. Seeing that devastation up close and personal is something I will never forget and is what made me realize I needed to start taking action for the planet. So I started volunteering for Greenpeace and pursuing a low-waste lifestyle. It was then that I started searching for eco-friendly skincare and found either products that were greenwashed or that were actually sustainable but subpar products. Frustrated with the options available, I decided to start Glotanicals, and we launched our first product in 2021. To this day, it is a deep love of nature and being a part of creating a more sustainable world in some small way that motivates me daily.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think to date, one of my biggest accomplishments has been how Glotanicals has gone above and beyond the industry standards for sustainability to create truly sustainable products from the ground up. We're the only brand I know of with our own strict internal guidelines for sustainable ingredient sourcing and packaging.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is managing it all! As a small business owner, you have to wear a lot of hats and are constantly learning how to do new things. In just the last year, I've had to learn how to be my own web developer, graphic designer, and wholesale account manager.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait until you're ready- the secret is you will never be ready, and that knowledge and clarity only come from action.
  2. Be humble and willing to learn along the way.
  3. Don't doubt the power of relationship building. No one gets anywhere on their own, and the relationships you build along the way will serve not only your business growth but also yourself as a person.
