Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rafaela González, Founder of Gloryscent Beauty, located in Lowell, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Gloryscent is a clean skincare company created for city women to protect and restore their skin from environmental aggressors like air pollution and sun damage.

Tell us about yourself

I underwent a journey of accepting my natural hair and embracing my heritage. With this came the understanding of how products worked for my hair, leading me to create products for myself. I later wanted to develop these products for other women as well.

Most products targeted at women of color are made with many potentially harmful ingredients, and I wanted to change that. Fulfilling my calling motivates me to get up every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment right now has been remaining optimistic and persevering through all the uncertainty we have faced these last couple of years. Just this alone is an incredible task, and I think it will determine our success in the long run.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are so many hard things! But I think resilience is the most challenging part of being a business owner. It’s so easy to get discouraged and throw in the towel.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Figure out where you want your brand to go.
  2. Don’t compare yourself to others to the point where you’re becoming discouraged—everyone has an area they shine in. Figure out your location.
  3. Be authentic and humble.
