Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kabria Cummings, Founder of Global Attic LLC., located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Global Attic sells a carefully sourced and curated collection of one-of-a-kind home décor to interior design enthusiasts and trade professionals. The statement pieces transform bland living spaces, convey individuality, and help to support the global community.

Tell us about yourself

I was exposed to decorating and collecting art at an early age as a result of my parents and a cousin who traveled the world as a professional dancer. After experiencing some life-changing events, I decided to pursue these hobbies full-time in the form of a business. Global Attic LLC was born soon after. I absolutely love being able to share my passion for sourcing uniqueness and quality with my customers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being able to consistently meet the needs of my customers who are looking for unique, quality products that they won't find at other stores.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are a lot of balls that you must keep in the air as a business owner. From adopting technology to securing capital to the development of inventory and navigating the various distribution channels, there are a lot of moving parts that one must become skilled at to keep the business afloat.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You must be flexible. Learn how to pivot quickly when something is or isn't working. Double down on the things that are working and get rid of those things that aren't.
  2. Learn when you need help. Don't be afraid to reach out to those who can better guide you where you are trying to go - those who have more experience, knowledge, and resources.
  3. Develop a strong work ethic but know when to take a break. Always attempt to grow your knowledge base so that you can continue to feed your business and have a definitive plan for where the business is going. However, with that, you must also know when to check in with yourself to make sure that you are pursuing your goals at a healthy pace that won't become a detriment to your achieving those business goals.
