Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sonee Thompson, Owner of Get Good Body, located in Tampa, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I educate people, schools, and organizations on how to obtain health and longevity through proper exercise geared toward their goals, nutrition, age group, and fitness level. I stress technique and control to improve the performance of athletes and the body image of the general public. I have specialized knowledge of Pilates in clinical and club environments, as well as Martial Arts. My passion is helping others reach their peak and accomplish athletic superiority and a mind/body connection. I am an inventor and creator of innovative health, fitness, and wellness products.

Tell us about yourself

I have been an athlete and musician all my life, starting in high school as a track and field sprinter, high jumper, and softball player (2nd baseman and power hitter batter). I also play classical piano and flute. Later in life, after graduating from the University of Florida with a B.S. degree and heading out to L.A. to work with Disney Studios, I resubmerged myself in sports and fitness. After achieving my Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do from the dojo of Master Billy Blanks in Los Angeles, California, I resolved to make my mark in the world of fitness by creating my brand, Get Good Body.

I am now a Certified Fitness Expert, Master Pilates Instructor, Personal Trainer, Sports Coach, and Inventor of health and wellness products. I use my broadcasting degree as a sports and fitness host and have interviewed the top professional boxer, NFL players, and more on my Facebook page, Sonee's Sports Report.

I am motivated by my faith in God, the strength of my life, and provides the confidence that enables me to help and serve others to achieve their health and wellness goals and be the best versions of themselves mentally and physically. All of my mantras and philosophies point back to a standard of excellence set forth by my parents and my training in martial arts.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Independently inventing, creating, and designing:

  1. Good Body Wear and innovative activewear line
  2. The Burn Belt - a waist trimmer, torso toner, and back and posture support
  3. Good Body Essentials Organic Oil Blends for natural healing

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Stopping the wheel and hiring staff to help you evolve to the next level. I am better at the creative side though I know how to do the business end - it sucks up all of my time. I am still working on that. I do too much independent work and need to hire and delegate so I can achieve the many goals I have to truly fulfill my vision.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't try to do too much. Refine and do a few things well, then move on to your next goal.
  2. Formulate grassroots connections with others in your industry and then climb bigger trees.
  3. Take time to recharge yourself, or you will burn out and lose motivation or become overwhelmed.
