Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Georgette Eva, Founder of Morning Person Studio, located in Washington, DC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a freelance content marketer and social media manager. I help a range of clients and start-ups share their stories through their blog posts, websites, Linkedin and Instagram posts, and more. For my clients, I'm their thought partner in anything content related. That means taking an idea like a Linkedin Giveaway or hitting the 10-episode mark on a podcast series and building a campaign to meet their goals. I have a range of clients from start-ups, media outlets, and large non-profit organizations. I commit to projects and organizations that hopefully can help bring a stronger, more empathetic future, and most of my clients are aligned with that mission. They're Saas tech companies striving for people-first cultures, podcasts inspiring other creators with purpose-driven leadership, and non-profits looking to bring sustainable methods to those in need.

Tell us about yourself

I tried freelancing early on in my career before I worked full-time for marketing teams, and I never thought I'd try it again. I was really young and lacked a lot of confidence then, so I certainly struggled to network and find my own voice. I thought that I was better suited to cheering other entrepreneurs on within their teams. But when the Pandemic happened, like so many of us, I had a renewed perspective. I had an amazing manager who really saw my interest and drives to do more creative things, from design to writing. She was really the first person to tell me that my creativity was a superpower and not a distraction. It was like a light bulb went on. For years managers tried to keep me in line to stay in line or focused on a spreadsheet, and here was someone giving me space to say, "Hey, I have an idea!" And then telling me to run with it. "Creativity is my superpower." It sounds so silly, but it's motivated me and picked me up in times of doubt as I started my business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This is weird to say, but keeping up the business has been one of my biggest accomplishments. As someone who didn't think she'd start her own company or who would go off on her own, the fact that I choose to do this and find projects and partners to work with every day feels so gratifying.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's a lot when you're by yourself. I've heard this before and can't agree more. To an extent, I've worked remotely for over 6-7 years now, before the Pandemic made it a staple, and I learned ways to stay focused and self-motivated. But when it comes to those moments of indecision or when you're planning out the next quarter? It's a lot to take on by yourself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid to reach out. When I started, I reached out to other entrepreneurs just to grab a coffee and pick their brains. Everyone was really nice about sharing their own experiences and offering to help. I even started working with people from those coffee chats.
  2. Get expert advice. That could be accounting, registering, or even developing your sales pipe. I worked with a business coach to help me start and build confidence. I sought accountants to ensure I was doing best practices in terms of finances. It helped give me confidence in my decisions and create processes to avoid missteps.
  3. Everyone started where you are now. Even though you see entrepreneurs posting boldly about their journey to success, remember that they all struggled before too. Remember that we all made up steps as we went along. Remember that we watched Youtube videos, read blog posts, and hosted coffees with other entrepreneurs to learn their ways. One of my favorite podcasts, 'How I Built This,' is so affirming because it shows how some businesses were accidents that founders just went with— and it works out!
