Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gayle Faulkner, Founder of Gayle Faulkner Fine Art LLC., located in Overland Park, KS, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a professional artist who creates and sells Textural Impressionistic Acrylic paintings. By using a palette knife in conjunction with acrylic paint, gels, and modeling paste, I am able to create paintings that have an almost 3D feeling and invite the viewer to enter, lean against a tree, listen to the sounds of nature, smell the beautiful fragrances and just relax and enjoy.

Tell us about yourself

I love what I am doing as an artist and look forward to every day that I can immerse myself in the creative process. I am totally in tune with each painting as I open my imagination and have a conversation with the painting as I paint. I feel that every creation is like a child that is so precious but, at times, can be rebellious and difficult (much like teenage angst). With patience and open communication, paintings always become beautiful, productive adults.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel that my biggest accomplishment is to continue growing and understanding the art world as I present my art through galleries, publications, and websites.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Needing to wear so many shoes at the same time can be a huge challenge. I think this may be something that I will continue to grow into. Being a professional artist is much more than creating artwork.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set your goals for the long term but remember that success comes with baby steps, so be sure to be realistic about possible wins and losses.
  2. Be sure that you consider budgeting. Starting a business can be expensive. Be sure to fully research every opportunity to make sure that it is a good one for your goals and bottom line.
  3. At times, you must stop and rethink your big-picture goals and make some adjustments. This is not a loss but a realistic way to make your business succeed.
