Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gaspard Fougea, a meditation teacher based in Paris, France.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is all around helping people feel better and have healthier relationships with themselves and others through self-knowledge and meditation. With these tools, it is possible to improve our well-being in daily life, build healthier relationships, improve our efficiency and creativity, and improve our sleep, among many other benefits. I offer private sessions and workshops up to twice a week, as well as access to an online platform with more than 70 hours of content (past workshops and meditations).

Tell us about yourself

My background is in mathematics. My studies led me to a space where I was trying to understand and control everything with my mind, which led me to a growing feeling of anxiety and several chronic physical ailments. In 2014 after an inner crisis, I discovered meditation, which completely changed my life. I spent the following years dedicating myself almost entirely to this inner practice, and I started to teach five years ago.

Our inner world follows certain rules which, once we understand, we can use to improve the way we feel and the clarity and discernment which we experience in our daily life. Our mind is the tool we use to make every single decision and to work, yet no one teaches us how to interact with it in a healthy way. The mind can be calm and happy, and when it is the case, it also becomes precise and lucid.

These understandings made me feel completely passionate about sharing this simple science of the inner world - these tools that are accessible to anyone -with whoever is willing to go on this adventure of self-knowledge. I am also passionate about scientific research about the origin of consciousness and hope to start a Ph.D. in the coming years.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is to be able to have a functioning business that stays in alignment with my core values of kindness, service, and authenticity.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me has been to learn all these different jobs needed: marketing, video & sound editing, community management, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start by really being precise about your product and who it is for. Everything else follows from that.
  2. Be bold. Just go for it :)
  3. Take care of your mental space as you work hard. This will allow you to enjoy the rest of your life a lot more, as well as be more efficient in your work.
