Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gary te Roller, a high performance coach and business consultant, based in Paris, France.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I connect people to their peak potential and assist entrepreneurs and high-performers in utilizing their genius to expand their life and business. I incorporate a number of topics into my work, like integrative wellness, trauma diversion, personal development, business, and personal brand creation, neurolinguistics, language specificity, leadership, and team building as well as mindset and emotional optimization.

As a coach and advisor, I have one focus, and that is to help people solve problems and create their life with intention and integrity. I believe that how we create our personal lives is directly linked to how we create business brands and companies. I help entrepreneurs and leaders increase their energy, integrity, and maximal output to influence their greater community to be better. To live better. To love better. To ultimately become a community leader leading from a place of intention and integrity.

Tell us about yourself

What got me started in the business of helping others in the realm of coaching and consulting began when I began noticing I was working in a corporate preconceived box. It drained all of my energy, and I soon found my only escape to be drug and alcohol addiction. It spiraled out of control to somehow in control as, through my journey of sobriety, I found the courage to step outside of the corporate world and give myself space to understand and develop my creative genius. Through this journey, I discovered that I loved working with other like-minded humans. The interaction, the human behavior psychology, the element of thinking outside the box and helping others to do the same to expand themselves.

I tested this further by hiring my own coaches and immersing myself in the personal development industry to learn how to create the life I wanted to live. What motivates me each morning is the question I ask myself daily 'what is my intention today' and conduct my days and life according to that. And outside of myself, what motivates me even more is to share my insights with others and help them focus on their intentions and what they put out day to day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Some of my biggest accomplishments are being on the founding team of 5 start-ups, reaching an accumulation of ZAR 5 billion from these 5 companies. I also have taken my own consulting company from the ground up and turned it into a 5 figure revenue sum company, keeping it stable today. I also am a co-founder of one of the fastest-growing restaurant consultancies in the Middle East.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest parts about being a business owner is the opinions you're faced with on a daily basis. Those who may not live the same life as me, may not see the same perspective or understand the ideas I have.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Identify the one thing that you LOVE doing and are incredibly skillful at and zone in on that as your USP (unique selling point). Do not worry if it does not seem like a valid business idea just yet. With this in mind, write down a massive long-term goal (be as specific as possible explaining all the detail) - put this in your pocket every day to hold yourself accountable.
  2. Get a mentor or join a mastermind. Feed off other people who bring skillsets and insights you may not have. This will feed your mind with more out-of-the-box thinking to turn something that initially doesn't seem commercially viable into something VERY commercially viable. Another option is to intentionally meet up weekly with people that are already successful in your field or read books by geniuses in your industry/field/subject.
  3. Remain flexible mentally and commercially. The one thing entrepreneurs have as an advantage over big corporates is the flexibility to change the course of direction of their business or idea if need be. Don't quit building your vision but also don't let your ego allow you to keep hitting your head against the wall while the world around you shifts and changes. Always prioritise feeling over thinking something.
  4. Learn the correct strategy to implement to build your business that has already been used and use that as a building block on top of your definite desire. Any idea can be a business, but most never get there because the entrepreneur overthought it and was not willing to take that first step.
