Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gary Buxton, Executive Coach and Coaching Psychologist at Leading Dynamic Ltd, located in Manchester, England, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an Executive Coach and Coaching Psychologist who works with leaders, managers, and entrepreneurs. Through offering both coaching and leadership development, I support teams and individuals to excel at work whilst maintaining the balance necessary for them to sustain their enjoyment and motivation.

Tell us about yourself

My entire career has been focused on helping people realise their potential, navigate complexity and overcome life's challenges. Following my role as a founding CEO, moving into my own private coaching practice seemed like a natural progression. I now try to balance my life into thirds - one-third work with my commercial clients, one-third social impact work, and one-third play! I have a lot more time for learning and playing these days as compared to when I had thousands of staff!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment in my current role is always going to be the accomplishments of my clients. By creating time for them to organise their thinking, de-stress, and reconnect with their motivation during tough times, I help people to build high-performing teams and organisations. I've enjoyed building my own successful private practice in Manchester and love translating this experience into teaching and supervision for other coaching professionals.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Setting up a business is definitely something that suits generalists. In my career, I've established three businesses, and on each occasion, the first few weeks and months required me to do a little bit of everything. Of course, my specialism is being a psychologist, but I really enjoy all the other elements of running my own business - admin, marketing, sales, finance, HR, and tech - knowing I can rely on myself in these early stages helps to make good things happen.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pursue the things you love and enjoy.
  2. It's not who you know, but who knows what you know.
  3. Create happy clients who then become your marketing department!
