Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gary Barragan, Owner of Gary Barragan Photography, located in Louisville, KY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own and operate Gary Barragan Photography, I preach that you are your own brand and that example starts with me photographing under my own name. I want my name to be associated with my brand. That being said, I specialize in modern headshots. My customers are folks who hold value in creating a credible and approachable online profile with modern headshots that make an impact. This can be actors, business professionals, realtors, musicians, or doctors. Honestly, in today's age, if you're online in any form or fashion, you can benefit from a modern high-end headshot.

Tell us about yourself

I've always loved photographing since I was about 19 or 20. Back in 2010 or so, I borrowed a camera from a friend to practice photographing. It was a DLSR, whereas before, my cameras were just point-and-shoots. That was all it took, and about a year later, I bought my own. I was taking pictures everywhere, and eventually, people started asking me to take photos of them. A short year later after that, I decided to go professional and started my business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've won awards in the past, but I think really the biggest accomplishment is anytime I've been thanked for my headshot work by a client. Many times I've photographed someone for their headshot for an upcoming interview application or audition, and then I hear back that the headshot we created got them into the door for said interview or audition! It gives me the feels when I receive messages of thanks and gratitude because the headshot I literally created for them has changed their life for the better.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think with any business, one of the hardest things is staying relevant and maintaining a reputation of being an industry leader in your market. You can't become complacent. You must always seek ways to improve and stay ahead of the curve.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your niche, own it, and master it.
  2. Never be afraid of risk; the reward will be there.
  3. Conditions your mind to understand that business success is a marathon, not a 40-yard dash.
