What's your business, and who are your customers?

G4 Guitar Schools Brookline is a guitar and bass school located in Brookline, MA. We offer beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons to all those who have a desire to learn. Our students range from age 4 to adult. We use our own method, The G4 Guitar Method, which is a structured, skills-based approach to learning the guitar.

Tell us about yourself

At first, I started the business to start earning a steady income (being a full-time gigging musician is a lot of fun, but the pay can be erratic). Teaching quickly became a passion, and I love helping students achieve their goals from the ground up and even do what they never expected on their instrument.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel like my biggest accomplishment was starting a profiting business with no loan, no employees (at first), and just nothing but stubborn determination.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is the weight it takes on to make sure everyone is taken care of, my employees, my students, and my family.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Try to get a loan and/or some investors upfront.
  2. Treat your employees well, and they'll treat your clients well.
  3. Keep experimenting when it comes to advertising. Don't become complacent. Always be looking to grow.
