Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Futch, Founder of Levels Music Production, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hi, First of all, everybody calls me "Futch." I teach music makers of all kinds how to write, record, edit and mix better songs at home by teaching them the timeless fundamentals of music production.

Tell us about yourself

When online learning skyrocketed in 2020, I decided to take what I had been teaching at schools since 1994 into the virtual classroom. I'm inspired to offer some beginner-level music production courses for free and then offer customers a chance to dig deeper into the experience if they want to.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment is going from learning absolutely nothing about business to at least knowing the basics of marketing and sales, which is a huge aspect of this. I'm in the process of understanding who my customers are and solving their problems. I've learned more since 2020 than I have in the ten years previous, maybe twenty.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Sales. Absolutely sales without question. My nemesis.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Nobody cares about your company or products. Solve your customer's problems.
  2. Think of everything you do from your customer's POV.
  3. Go to AppSumo.com and stop paying for subscriptions. You're welcome!
