Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey by launching a food business but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with owner Kathy Hale, of canihaveabite, St Kansas City MO.

What's your business and who are your customers?

From farm to kitchen to home, canihaveabite is reinventing dining.

Eating nutritious farm fresh meals at home no longer needs to be a challenge. We use 100% plant based compostable packaging. This means zero waste is created when you buy from canihaveabite.

Our dishes are created from seasonal produce of local organic farmers whenever possible and are rich with organic ingredients. We serve only purified reverse osmosis water. We care about your health and the health of the earth.

Tell us about yourself

This business began because my pilates clients had food sensitivities and there weren't any convenient solutions. I began by creating a weekly menu for them.

That handful of clients grew into a full meal prep, cleanse and quick service business. I am motivated by offering healthy solutions to customers and creating a food business that also focuses on the health of the planet.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating a system that works despite all the challenges faced during the pandemic.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Bootstrapping a business and juggling all the necessary jobs needed to be done.

What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1) Do it because you are passionate about your idea.

2) Be clear about what you are creating and stay with that core concept.

3) Be flexible. It is hard to know from day one exactly how things will go. The pandemic taught us all how necessary it is to be flexible with our plans.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Always plan long term. What do you want this business to be? Do you want to eventually sell it? Make it a family business? Ask yourself, what do you want out of it?
