Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Francesca Chang, founder of Attorney on a Journey, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Attorney on a Journey is a career & lifestyle coaching service for outliers who seek to monetize their passions or otherwise design their dream careers or lifestyles. It was founded by an ex-lawyer who took the path less traveled by pivoting into six different careers after the law. A business that practices what it preaches, Attorney on a Journey is also an income-generating blog that seeks to inspire and serve as yet another example of how clients can pursue their passions.

Tell us about yourself

I am an ex-lawyer, career & lifestyle coach, influencer, author, and motivational speaker. With a strong passion for advocating for the voiceless, I went to law school with a mission to help others. Unfortunately, the mental and physical sacrifices I endured during law school took a toll on my mind & body, and I wasn't even able to help myself.

I gained 15 pounds, was losing hair, and the doctors thought I had kidney stones before I even sat for the Bar. I quit the law 3 months after passing the Bar in search of meaning & purpose. I transitioned into six careers (BD, marketing, recruiting, freelance writing, etc.) until I became a paid travel blogger in my reclaimed motherland of Taiwan.

I thought my journey was over and was happy in Taiwan until lawyers, who were crying under their desks, started messaging me on Instagram:
"How did you leave the law?"
"How did you find happiness?"
That's when I realized my true calling was to help others seek THEIR truth.

To date, I've helped videographers become NASA engineers, lawyers start their own businesses, and mothers find balance while advancing in their careers. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my clients push past their self-limiting beliefs to pursue what they truly want to do with their lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being able to monetize my knowledge and experiences and teaching others that they can do exactly the same. We are all experts in something. Why not get paid to do what you love and help others while you are at it?

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Remember to look back at where I started from and celebrate my progress. With so much data and information at my (our) fingertips, it can be hard not to compare myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pick something that you are truly passionate about. It has to be about more than just the money. The money will come, but waking up each day feeling fulfilled is priceless.
  2. Don't wait to start until you think you are "ready." Because you will never truly be ready, your business will evolve and grow just as you do, so the time to start is RIGHT NOW.
  3. Take baby steps each day and celebrate all of your wins, big or small.
