Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissa Bentivoglio, co-founder of Frame Fitness, located in Miami, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Frame is a revolutionary, digitally connected Pilates reformer that gives you access to hundreds of on-demand and lives classes. Innovative and the first of its kind—Frame's foldable, sleek reformer is cutting-edge and modern with superior engineering and craftsmanship. Whether you live in a studio apartment or have your own home gym, Frame's smart, portable design adds elegance and intention whilst elevating your space.

Our customers are Pilates enthusiasts who want expert instruction that empowers and motivates them. They are ambitious women and men, 25-55, who hold high aspirations for themselves. They want to be part of an active and inclusive community. They are high-earning and highly motivated. As a result, they are busy, and their routines can be unpredictable. Frame lets them adapt their lives - on their own terms - while making a bold statement about who they are, the goals they set, and the lifestyle choices they prioritize.

Tell us about yourself

I am the CEO and Founder of Frame Fitness. I was immersed in the world of elite classical ballet training and competitive dancing from a young age until University. While healing from a sports-related injury, Pilates was prescribed for rehabilitation. In 2018, I designed my own custom reformer, which eventually went into my boutique fitness studio, Frame Fitness, located in the heart of Toronto, which opened in February 2020. In April 2020, amidst the global pandemic, I started designing my second proprietary reformer, this time for the home. The first digital Pilates reformer in North America.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Watching the original business plan come to fruition through hard work, external partnerships, and execution.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part when owning a business is learning to delegate. As a CEO and business starter, it is important to have a clear, passionate vision; however, one person can't do everything. Cultivating an effective working environment is invaluable! Only you know what your vision is, and you should never let anyone change that.

Eventually, you will run out of energy and focus, which can only hurt you in the long run. Be sure to continue to work on yourself, and a work-life balance, mental, physical, and emotional health should always be a top priority. A team is crucial to startup success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. To start a business - Create a blueprint of the business which will help to create structure and allow for execution.
  2. To run and grow a business - Establish a solid brand, hire the right people, and establish a good growth strategy. It's critical that all core team members have an aligned vision.
