Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dale Morgan, President and CEO of Foundation47, located in Lexington, KY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I specialize in financial literacy education facilitation as well as keynote and motivational speaking services. I also offer one-on-one personal finance mentoring/coaching. I'm currently looking into establishing an online financial literacy platform as well as offering job placement services.

Tell us about yourself

The motivation for my business was my experience living in poverty and on the lower half of The Gini coefficient, which measures the inequality among values of a frequency distribution, such as levels of income. I grew up on government assistance, but it was nearly enough. I always knew that there was a better way of living. I discovered that improving my financial acumen and becoming fiscally responsible would be the key for me. With my bachelor's degree in Accounting, 14 plus years working in accounting and finance, plus my real-life personal finance expertise, I'm able to relate to and deliver a compelling message that provides a financial awakening to my audience. I truly believe that financial literacy provides a pathway out of poverty and self-reliance, and I'm living proof of that.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say that my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is my ability to spark the entrepreneurial spirit of the individuals I encounter on a daily basis. For most of us, it has been ingrained in us to always go seek a job, to always be a consumer, but almost never to be an entrepreneur and make a difference in our communities. Representation matters; people don't become what they want; they become what they see and believe about themselves.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think people sometimes don't really understand the commitment it takes to be a business owner. By commitment, I mean time, mentally, physically, emotionally, and the overall stress of it. As your business grows and becomes more successful, these things will alleviate to a degree, but they will always exist.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find something that you're great at and provide a need for others.
  2. Strategically plan your course of action for your business, and do your due diligence in terms of empirical research on the business industry you're about to dive into.
  3. Master these four attributes; I call them P3R - Positive Thinking, Patience, Perseverance, and Resilience.
