What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own the Flower Kiosk in Portsmouth, NH, and our customers are some of the most loyal and supportive people you will ever meet!
Tell us about yourself
I started working in the floral industry back when I was 20 years old. I started in the flower department at Whole Foods. I eventually moved on to a flower shop with a brick-and-mortar store and also did large weddings and events. This was when I knew flowers were going to be my life. What motivates me is flowers, so I get to work at what I enjoy most.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being here after a pandemic. This was by far the hardest thing I have had to endure since buying the shop in 2017.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
At this point, I would have to say finding the right team members. This past year, it has been tricky to find someone that fits our team.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Take care of yourself. Try not to let the small stuff take over. If you can figure out the work-life balance, that would be amazing—and if you do, let me know how :)
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I had always wanted to work at the Flower Kiosk since I saw it back in 2002. I told my husband, "I want to own that shop someday." And I finally got my foot in the door in 2015, and after being here a short time, the previous owner asked me if I wanted to buy the shop from her when we were out for coffee one morning. I didn't even speak with my husband first, I just yelled, "yes!'. It was the best decision for my career, and I couldn't be happier.
