What's your business, and who are your customers?

Flower Kingdom is a retail florist that offers beautiful fresh flower arrangements, green and blooming plants, balloons, Godiva chocolates, Wines, and silk flowers and plants. Our customers are anybody that is trying to express a special emotion... Birthdays, Love, Anniversary, Get well, New Baby, Sympathy, Congratulations, Wedding or any occasion.

Tell us about yourself

Flower Kingdom was started by my parents in 1985. I was attending college and helping them in the store part-time. I would do anything that needed to be done.. from sweeping the floor to answering the phones to making deliveries.

I was attending Florida Atlantic University. Once I graduated with a BA in Accounting, I started working for a CPA firm. That only lasted a couple of weeks as I realized that I was not meant to be sitting behind a computer and crunching numbers! I was missing the creativity and the excitement of the flower business. So in 1995, when my parents were ready to retire, my wife and I bought the business from them.

I enjoy dealing with customers and knowing every day; I get to make people happy with our beautiful creations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being nominated as a Small Business of the Year by the local Chamber of Commerce.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing the Staff.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a niche business, so it's not easy for anybody to compete.
  2. Find a business that you enjoy, so it does not feel like you are going to work.
  3. When you own your own business, it's not a 9 to 5 job, especially if you are in a retail business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Starting and growing a business is a lot of hard work, but once you succeed, there is no greater satisfaction.
