Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shanique Lanier, Owner of Flossy Decor, located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Flossy Decor is more than an event coordinating business. It's a process of applying my POSE services to every customer to guarantee satisfaction. My customer connections are diverse and open to everyone. I appeal to those who enjoy celebrating achievements and making extraordinary memories to reflect on in the future.

I also hope to grow my audience with those who need help preparing repass dinners after funerals. As well as home Staging for realtors, office gatherings and more.

Tell us about yourself

Losing my grandmother on Christmas morning last year opened my eyes to explore things I had neglected. One of those things was my love for helping others. For the past 15 years, I have been decorating, arranging, and executing elaborate decorations for all sorts of occasions. With that being said, I noticed over the many years of hosting parties that some people avoid the process of celebrating due to the anxiety of organizing. I was journaling one morning and created my POSE method.

As my thoughts continued to develop, I curated my business Flossy Decor LLC. What motivates me is waking up blessed and healthy every morning, knowing I'm an inspiration to my children. I want them to overcome their challenges, face their obstacles and have faith they can achieve anything they want in this life. What better way to teach them than to show them every day an example of how it's done?

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have several big accomplishments as a new business owner. I am making a difference in the black community and investing in myself at the same time. What a blessing to tell my future grandchildren I made a difference in this world, one occasion at a time. I make people smile, and proud they shopped with Flossy Decor. That's priceless.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Timing. I'm also a mom, a wife, and an individual. There's simply never enough time in the day to dream aloud, fulfill my duties as a mom and a wife, and still manage to make time for self-love. I would say I don't know how I do it, but I know it's God. How some ways, I managed to balance my family and my passion for servicing others.

It gets frustrating having to miss some things, and I get discouraged every now and then when I'm simply not in the mood to create. However, I've dreamed of this for years, and this new "baby"(business) in my life will continue to thrive.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top 3 tips I'd give to someone are to seek a business mentor, believe in yourself, and stay consistent once your platform starts growing. (Keep God first is my first true answer if that's allowed).

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I'm honored to have this opportunity to share my experience with starting a new business. It was always humbling to share with people to Google the name Shanique Gilliam (my maiden name). My published story always reminds me of how far I've come. Now my goal is to make Shanique Lanier worth googling.
