Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Florina Petrescu, Founder of Florys Music, located in West Bloomfield, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business name is Florys Music. I provide live music for weddings, proposals, birthday parties, corporate events, bridal showers, kid's parties, and much more. I also offer private violin lessons. I engage my students in a variety of styles, and I teach using different methods crafted for each individual student.

Tell us about yourself

I immigrated from Romania 8 years ago. I found myself in a different world, and I had to change the way I looked at my career. I started very small, as nobody knew me in the US. I learned how this country works and grew as a person and artist, as the competition here is huge. Now, I am playing with some of the best orchestras in Michigan, and I am collaborating with my fellow musicians and friends to design the music for different events, but I also do a lot of solo work, playing a solo violin. I enjoy my career so much, as it gives me challenges every day. No day is the same as the other. I love what I do, and I never say: I have to go to work. I have to go and... PLAY. As this is how everybody should feel about their lives and careers. As a playground for growth, change, happiness, and joy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In the music world, as a business owner, my biggest accomplishment is that I am able to do this full-time. I have the freedom of time and the freedom of choosing who to work with. This doesn't come without challenges, though. But the satisfaction of building my career every day into what I envision is amazing.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Challenges of all sorts. But the biggest one for me, an introvert, is that communicating with people is an everyday challenge. It might not seem like it, but I need to get out of my comfort zone and speak and write in a language that is not native. But I do it anyways. In my work, communication is the key to success. (alongside practice and offering the best services).

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait to have all the answers. Start anyway.
  2. Walk on your path and don't look back. There is nothing there for you.
  3. Be relentless.
